Hello and thank you for visiting

The website for Commencement Children’s Therapy!

IMG_1362Hi! I’m Shari Addleman, owner of Commencement Children’s Therapy, pediatric occupational therapist, and southern belle from Tennessee who moved to the Pacific Northwest almost 30 years ago; I still have the accent to prove it so be prepared! I fell in love with the Northwest and now call it home! The more time I spent on the Puget Sound and by Commencement Bay, I realized this is where I belong!! I raised a beautiful and delightful son, Cameron, and was married to an Air Force NCO for 18 years. I love Tacoma and the eclectic, genuine nature of this area. My heart is the happiest along the waterfront which is where the inception of Commencement Children’s Therapy happened! I am so happy to provide occupational therapy services for the growing number of children, birth to 8 years of age, who need services in Tacoma and the surrounding areas.

Our mission is to provide a special place where families feel supported and empowered to meet the joys and challenges of raising a child with neurodiverse needs, all the while appreciating the unique personality and character inside! It is not the intent to change the child to be more like us but to support each child in becoming the most independent, confident, and happy person he or she can become. It is our purpose to support the family unit, to share ideas, model strategies, and ways to engage with their child, to help parents advocate for their child and navigate the systems they are working within, to provide strategies at home to make life a little easier, and to provide an occasional “breather” to walk along the waterfront or sit on the patio with a coffee. We are here to support your family and be a part of your team!

I am happy to announce the addition of speech therapy services by Melinda Sidor, SLP, Inc.  Melinda is a Washington native and has been working as a speech-language pathologist in the Puyallup School District for the last twelve years. I am happy to announce our collaboration with Stacey Sheridan and her physical therapy practice, Sound Care Physical Therapy! Stacey was born and raised in Georgia, earning her B.S. Ed in Kinesiology from the University of Georgia, and Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the Medical College of Georgia. After graduating in 2009, the Pacific Northwest drew her west and she began her career working at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Now married with two children, she expanded her interests in physical therapy care to pediatrics. Both of her lovely children have neurodiverse conditions, and partnering in care with their occupational therapist has expanded her horizons in early childhood development.

Please call Stacey directly at 253-306-0427  or email her at stacey@soundcarept.com.

More Collaborative Partners!!

Gabriela Raisl, MA, LMFTA, and Saguaro Therapy! Gabriela shares, “My family has been part of the Commencement Children’s Therapy practice for about 2 years. My children are 3 and 5 years old. I had a lot of expectations about motherhood and marriage, as most of us do. There was very little support in the various phases of becoming a parent, from pregnancy to birth, to seeing that my child needed extra help. I felt very alone at those points and decided I wanted to be a person that could be the support I needed for other couples and families. The road to healing and living life on your terms starts here. Therapy offers a space to get to know ourselves fully and to start healing from experiences that may have been harmful. I work from a narrative and emotionally focused lens. I specialize in working with couples and individuals who are experiencing difficulties in parenting, infidelity, trauma including racial trauma and childhood trauma. I offer neurodiversity-affirming therapy for parents as well as adults who are exploring their relationship with that term. I enjoy working with men who are wanting to strengthen their relationships with friends and family, as well as with themselves. In my couples work I lean into emotionally focused therapy (EFT). EFT helps to resolve conflict by creating secure attachments and intimacy. Finding a therapist is a big step and can be challenging. My work is tailored to meet you where you are. Let’s talk to see if I can meet your needs, or help with a referral. Please call for a free consultation. I am accepting new clients”.

Hylan Hampton, MSW, C-IAYT, and Foundational Healing! Hylan was born and raised in GA. She earned her B.A. in Psychology from Wesleyan College, followed by her Masters in Social Work from UGA. After working in critical care as a case manager, she moved from GA with her active duty military spouse. They eventually moved to WA in 2014 and have called the PNW home ever since. Hylan has two children; her oldest is neurodiverse. Having begun education and training in various fitness modalities throughout her “military required moves”, she eventually fell down the rabbit hole of yoga and found it had the potential to offer her emotional, physical, and mental support in much needed ways, which allowed her to better support not only her oldest child, but her whole family. In 2020 Hylan completed her yoga therapy training and became an Internationally Certified Yoga Therapist through IAYT. During her journey she was introduced to the teachings of Āyurveda, an over 5,000-year-old medical system from India, that aims to support one’s health through the tools of diet and lifestyle. It is a beautiful system, encompassing the entire breadth of a person, and Hylan has found this practice, in conjunction with therapeutic yoga, very effective in supporting one through the ups and downs of life. Hylan is currently in an Āyuveda Health Counselor course, and will receive her Āyurveda Health Counselor certification at the end of 2024. Contact Hylan directly at 912-667-1296 or hylanhampton@gmail.com or www.foundationalhealing.com

Luna, our “Good Citizen Certified” Golden Retriever, might be in the office from time to time and she enjoys napping in the office, being fed treats by the kids, and receiving soft pats on her head! She stays in the office and we respect a child’s comfort level around dogs!
